It’s Time for Clubs to Indulge in Panic Buying
The transfer window is soon going to close and it is that time of the year when clubs are going to indulge in panic buying. The clubs most likely to go down this route will be the ones who perceive their existence and fortunes to be in danger. Traditionally, clubs that were floundering would usually dig deep into their coffers to come up with enough cash to buy players who they felt would help bail them out of trouble.
Fans also would swoon at the prospect of new signings who hopefully would ensure their club’s survival. Others would deride such moves and would predict impending disaster. The newspapers also will not be able to stop reporting about impending transfers and the retail shop will be doing brisk business.
With the rather surprising draw against Newcastle over this weekend, Manchester United is a prime candidate for panic buying. The Man United dynasty is in danger and may even be teetering on the edge unless it is able to grab hold of the likes of Dimitar Berbatov.
Another club that will be pressing the panic button is Liverpool, which seems to have made yet another bid for Aston Villa’s Gareth Barry even if the player is cup tied thanks to his appearance in Iceland in a European fixture earlier this month. In fact, Liverpool has even been in touch with another player. This one is from Portugal and they are also planning on getting Juventus’ midfielder, Tiago, on loan. In addition, they have their eyes on Arsenal’s former star player, Freddie Ljungberg.
Portsmouth is one club that will also be looking to buy in a rush, especially after being mauled at the hands of Chelsea this past weekend. This poor showing must surely be spurring them on to look for a player of the calibre of no less than the Argentinean captain, Juan Pablo Sorin, who is currently unemployed.
Though West Brom was beaten by Arsenal, they were, nevertheless, able to give a good account of them and are currently pursuing a player by the name of Borja Valero.
Me anwhile, Manchester City, after they lost miserably to Aston Villa, is looking to add to their team by purchasing Mikael Silvestre who is also wanted by Sunderland, another losing team over the weekend.
However, it seems that Chelsea are going to fail in their bid to secure Real Madrid ace, Robinho, though his presence would be more like icing on cake rather than a desperate move to strengthen an already powerful bunch of players. The Spurs also do not seem to be getting anywhere in their pursuit of Andrei Arshavin.
Another trivial deal in the offing before the transfer window closes is the reported interest by the impressive Blackburn Rovers who seem to find MK Dons captain, Keith Andrews, worth a second look. In addition, they hope to bag Robbie Fowler, the Liverpool legend, because he still shows in training that he is certainly a potent striker.
The next week should see some interesting developments, depending on the bank balances of various clubs and the urgency of their requirements. Panic buying season is well and truly underway, and we can only wait and see who moves where and for how much.
