What Give the English Premier League so much Power over its World Counterparts?

The English Premier League breathed new life into English football with its conception in 1992, renewing the world's love of the game. At that time, the original top-division could no longer compete with Italy's Series A and other larger leagues that were out there at the time. When the Premier League arrived on the scene, it had to cover the many incidences that had seriously tarnished the country's appeal in the game. It managed to do all that, and in record time.

Perhaps one of the largest factors in the immense growth in popularity of the English Premier League was the fact that Sky TV immediately contracted television rights with the league. Their marketing and appeal to the general public played a major role in defining the League and moulding it into the power house it is today. Still, there had to be something there that drove thousands into the stands.

With the valuable aid of Sky Sports, the English Premier League quickly built its empire around the unofficial motto of being the best League in the world. This would soon attract some of the most famous and highly skilled players and managers in the world. As more football stars arrived on English pitches, so too did the money.

The wealth would continue to pour in throughout the ensuing years, which would give the league the ability to pay out higher wages. Alan Shearer, for instance, was lured over to Newcastle United with a £15 million transfer fee. He wasn't the only one who ran to English teams.

The acquisition of the biggest names in football also brought with it millions of fans. The more fans that appeared in the stands, the more money lined the club's pocket, and so began the drought that other clubs around the globe still appear to suffer from today.

The truth of this is demonstrated when you look at the four big clubs in the English Premier League. Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea are virtually untouchable by other clubs in terms of skill and style. When these highly skilled clubs are on the pitch, the crowds already know they are going to get quality matches.

When players in the English Premier League are not out on the pitch, their faces and interviews are plastered in virtually every publication in the country. Even if this publicity isn't the kind you would like to have plastered all over the media, it gets people who maybe weren't huge fans of the game to come out and see what is going to happen next.

The media may have played a significant role in the inflation of the English Premier League's popularity, but it was none other than the players and managers themselves who keep it there. With the arrival of highly skilled foreign footballers, the excitement and fast paced style of the game is what continues to attract thousands of fans and drive its popularity.
